Why I Practice Law the Way I Do: Kristopher J. Hilscher

My interest in law developed at a very early age. My grandmother was a clerk of court and this early exposure to the law made an impression on me. Mesmerized when characters like Perry Mason were on television, I would argue with anybody and everybody. At that time, I simply liked the structure of developing an argument and seeing it through to its conclusion. A natural problem solver, I loved to strategize, develop a plan and implement it. I realized over time that the law was a profession in which I could combine my natural abilities with my desire to help people, particularly those who are unable to advocate for themselves.

Divorce is hard. For many people, it is one of the most difficult things they will ever experience. Having experienced my own parents’ marital struggles and ultimate divorce, I bring a unique understanding of the complicated nature of marriages and family dynamics to my practice. I understand the issues and can walk my clients through the entire process whether it’s a heated custody battle or the division of marital property. I recognize difficult family situations and can advise my clients accordingly. Whether a client is seeking advice for a relatively straightforward matter, or whether they have a complex, multi-year litigation case, I will examine the case and develop a strategy that works for the individual needs of my client. I am motivated, in large part, by a desire to help my clients during this transitional period in their lives and to help them, in whatever way I can, minimize the damage so frequently caused by divorce.

I enjoy practicing family law because it is personal. Yes, it is my business, but it’s also so much more than that. Practicing family law gives me an opportunity to develop relationships with clients that you simply cannot get in other areas of the law. I work closely with many clients for months (and sometimes years). I am glad that I am able to practice this way and I find it very rewarding to be able to have a client-focused practice. Working to achieve the best results for them often leads to bittersweet moments when a case is resolved and the client moves forward into the next chapter in their life.

I have tried hundreds of cases and each one is different. Each case presents a new challenge and comes with its own set of facts and nuances. One of the most important reasons to hire a family law attorney is to develop a tailored strategy that suits your needs because no two families are exactly the same. My client, support staff, and I form a team of sorts. Within that team, I believe it is my job to support the client throughout the divorce by analyzing the situation, providing options that best suit my client’s needs, and advocating for my client’s rights until we have reached a solution that is in their best interests. It is my hope and intent that my client always feels that she or he is firmly involved in the process.
