Raleigh is a city with history. As the capital of North Carolina and the county seat of Wake County, Raleigh boasts a population of over 400,000 people and a history that reaches back to 1788, when it was chosen as the site of the state’s capitol. When combined with the nearby cities of Cary, Durham and Chapel Hill, the metro area’s population expands to over 2 million North Carolina residents.
Our city is home to North Carolina State University and Shaw University, as well as a host of cultural and social centers like the North Carolina Symphony, the Carolina Ballet, and our state’s museums of art, history, and the natural sciences. In 2011, Time Magazine ranked Raleigh the third most educated city in the United States, based on the number of residents who hold at least one college degree.
Due to these and other features of our city, Raleigh has made a number of “Top 10” lists nationwide in the past several years, citing our quality of life, burgeoning business climate, and friendly communities as among the best places in the United States to live and work. In 2011, Raleigh claimed the No. 1 spot on the Businessweek “America’s Best Places to Live” list. Forbes Magazine named our city the third “Best Place for Business and Careers” nationwide in 2012. That same year, we topped the Dice Magazine list of Fastest Growing Cities for Technology Jobs – beating out tech powerhouses like the San Francisco Bay Area and Seattle.
