Avandia was heavily marketed and quickly became one of the biggest selling products manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline, a major pharmaceutical company based in London. “Despite existing warnings, these drugs were being prescribed to patients with significant heart failure.” – written statement accompanying the F.D.A. decision to issue the safety warning on Avandia in 2007.

The November 24, 2008 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine published a paper that studied almost 30,000 diabetic patients over the age of 65.  49.7% of these patients had been prescribed Avandia; 50.3%, another popular drug used for treatment of type 2 diabetes, Actos. 1,869 of the patients were dead a year later.
