SAMPSON COUNTY, NC – Emergency crews responded to the scene of a multi-vehicle collision along Interstate 40 in Sampson County on Tuesday morning, WTVD reports.
The accident happened on I-40 eastbound, close to mile marker 355 near Newton Grove at about 5:30 a.m. According to the NC State Highway Patrol, a car was traveling slowly or had stopped in the eastbound lane when it was struck from behind by a tractor-trailer carrying fuel. That caused the big rig to overturn in the lane, where it was hit by two other tractor-trailers.
It was then struck again by a pickup truck, resulting in a fire. A box truck crashed into median cables after it swerved to avoid the first tractor-trailer.
Four people were injured in the incident, one seriously while the other three had minor injuries.
Authorities had to off-load about 4,000 gallons of fuel that remained in the overturned tractor-trailer after the crash.
Traffic in the area will continue to be disrupted while crews work to repair damage to the interstate caused by the incident. The eastbound lane of I-40 is expected to be shut down from exit 348 to 355 until Wednesday at noon.
