Man charged with DWI in Raleigh wrong-way accident that left 3 injured

RALEIGH, NC – Police said an allegedly impaired driver was involved in a wrong-way crash in Raleigh Monday night that left three people injured, reports CBS17.

Raleigh police said 34-year-old Jose Lopez Sanchez was traveling in the wrong direction on Interstate 40 west when he struck another vehicle head-on near Hammond Road at about 8:36 p.m.  The driver of the other car and a passenger in Sanchez’s car were hospitalized with serious injuries, while Sanchez sustained minor injuries.

Sanchez was subsequently charged with driving while impaired.

A stretch of I-40 was closed for about four hours while the wreck was being cleared and investigated, according to the North Carolina Department of Transportation.  Police are continuing to investigate the incident.
