Driver critically injured following vehicle crash on Interstate 40 in Johnston County

BENSON, NC – A driver was critically injured following two separate accidents early Saturday morning in Johnston County, CBS17 reported.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol was called to the scene on Interstate 40 eastbound near mile marker 323 shortly before 4 a.m.

In the first incident, a 21-year-old man was driving a Ford Focus eastbound when he went off the interstate and collided with a concrete barrier.  State troopers said the Ford was on the highway with no lights or hazard indicators, and was in the dark when it was struck by an eastbound Freightliner box truck.  The box truck then struck a median guardrail and ended up tangled in guardrails in the median.

The Ford driver, a Fort Bragg resident, was rushed to the trauma center at WakeMed in Raleigh with injuries described as life-threatening.

The NCSHP said speed was a contributing factor in the initial Ford crash.
