Why I Practice Injury Law The Way I Do: Chip Younce

In early 1987 I had finally completed the training pipeline as a JAGC Officer in the U.S. Marine Corps and was ready to begin to practice law. My first assignment was as a military prosecutor, working for the various commands at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune. I had lots of courtroom experience much earlier in my career than most of my peers, and it was very professionally stimulating. On the other hand, it was not very personally gratifying. I just put one person after another in jail. There was no direct beneficiary of my work to shake my hand and thank me after a successful prosecution. There was only the faceless command sending one case after another to be tried.

In early 1988 I was transferred to Base Legal Assistance. I performed very little trial work there. I mostly drafted wills, gave divorce counseling, and helped Marines with consumer protection and landlord/tenant issues. The work was not quite as exciting, but I loved it. Each time I helped a Marine family with an unscrupulous merchant in town or with a landlord who was not obeying the law, the Marine would reach across the desk and shake my hand and offer sincere appreciation for my work.

In late 1988 when God told my family that it was time to leave the Marine Corps, I had to decide what I wanted to do in civilian life. From the experience I had as a prosecutor I realized that I would not be as happy working for large corporations or the government. I craved helping everyday families in matters that were important to them. When a Greenville personal injury law firm offered me a job opening their Raleigh office I jumped at it. Within a few months of beginning to practice personal injury law I realized that I was doing what God had put me here to do in my professional life. I was helping people through a very trying time of their lives. When you get up in the morning and realize that your work has real meaning, that knowledge makes all the difference.
