Durham man, 41, killed in pedestrian collision near U.S. 15/501 North

DURHAM, NC – A pedestrian collision Saturday night claimed the life of a Durham resident, the Durham Police Department said.

According to a CBS17 report, the victim was walking near the interchange of U.S. 15/501 North and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard when the incident took place shortly after 9:20 p.m.

The pedestrian, identified by police as 41-year-old Alfredo Ahilon-Mendoza, was walking in a travel lane when he was struck by the front of a 2020 GMC Acadia that was merging from Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard onto U.S. 15/501 North.

Ahilon-Mendoza was pronounced dead after being transported to an area hospital.  Police do not believe that speed or impairment were contributing factors in the fatal crash.

The driver was not immediately charged, but the investigation is continuing.
