Man arrested after firefighter struck by car in Cumberland County

CUMBERLAND COUNTY, NC – Authorities in Cumberland County said a car struck a firefighter on Thursday, and the alleged driver is now under arrest.

According to a WRAL report, the collision occurred on Legion Road near Ireland Drive in Hope Mills at about 3:48 p.m.   The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office said firefighters with the Pearce’s Mill Fire Department were responding to a gas leak at the time and shut down the roadway.

A man was told he could not drive down the road for safety reasons but he ignored the order, drove over the median and his vehicle hit the firefighter, the sheriff’s office said.  The firefighter was not seriously injured.

The driver, identified as 26-year-old Ramon Bonilla-Soto Jr. of Fayetteville, is facing numerous charges, including assault with a deadly weapon on a government official, careless and reckless driving, driving while license revoked and failure to obey a traffic control officer.
